Falcons Spotlight

Current NFL Season

A pair of losing streaks doomed the 2018 Atlanta Falcons season, but a three-game winning streak to close out the regular season provides hope going into 2019.

Perhaps the biggest offseason acquisition for Atlanta was the reunion between quarterback Matt Ryan and coach Dirk Koetter. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach was Ryan’s offensive coordinator for three seasons. After piloting the Bucs to a 19-29 record over the past three seasons, Koetter was fired and was quickly snatched up by the Falcons, in his former position of offensive coordinator. The pairing was made with the hope that it will return Ryan to his Super Bowl form of three seasons ago.

Julio Jones caught over 1,400 yards for the fifth-straight season. After not logging a touchdown in the first seven games of 2018, he ended up with eight.

On the defensive side of the ball, Atlanta used... MORE

Past Spotlights

Atlanta Falcons fans have a lot to be excited about in 2018. Not only do the Atlanta Falcons return a talented team and legitimate Super Bowl contender on the field, but fans can also experience the beautiful new Mercedes Benz Stadium in its second year of operation. In addition, Mercedes Benz Stadium will also be hosting Super Bowl LII in February of 2019. Should the Falcons make the Big Game, they will be the first team in the history of the NFL to play the game on their home field. After reaching the Super Bowl in 2016, the Falcons suffered a crushing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Division round of last year’s playoffs. Entering next season, the Falcons retain much of their talented roster. With elite players occupying most impact positions, the Falcons will look to their offense to carry them to another Super Bowl berth. 2016 NFL MVP Matt Ryan returns to lead an offensive unit packed with firepower. Ryan is flanked by All-Pro receiver Julio Jones. Jones is a top player maker in the league, and a sure-fire Hall of Famer once he decides to call it a career. The Falcons return a solid offensive line ready to pave the way for an elite running game behind the dynamic combination of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.

The Falcons’ defense has seen continual improvement under defensive-oriented head coach Dan Quinn. Lead by Pro Bowl edge-rusher Vic Beasley, the Falcons defense should be a force next season. For the Falcons to return to championship form, they will need Beasley to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. Former firth round pick, Grady Jarrett, has star potential on the defensive line. Hybrid defensive end/linebacker Takkarist McKinley is an ascending young star providing a great compliment to Beasley and Jarrett. Meanwhile, in the secondary, Safety Keanu Neal has progressed into a solid player. Neal is surrounded by veterans Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium: One year after opening, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is still generating tremendous excitement in Atlanta. MBS is home to both the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and the MLS’s Atlanta United in addition to some of the lowest food and beverage stadium concession prices in the country. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and $5 draft beers among a bevy of other stadium concession fare. In 2018-19, Mercedes Benz Stadium will play host to multiple concerts and college championship games. In 2019, Mercedes Benz Stadium will host Super Bowl LIII.

Super Bowl LII: Mercedes Benz Stadium (MBS) will play host to Super Bowl LIII (Super Bowl 53) on February 3, 2019. This will be the third Super Bowl that the city of Atlanta has hosted and its first since 1994.

The buzz surrounding the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 is palpable. Fresh off an appearance in Super Bowl LI, the Falcons have established themselves as an elite NFL team. The Falcons feature a big-play offense led by reigning NFL MVP Matt Ryan. Ryan is complimented by a great running game featuring Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Freeman and Coleman are widely regarded as the best 1-2 running back punch in the NFL. On the outside, Matt Ryan's favorite target is wide receiver Julio Jones. Jones, a perennial Pro-Bowler, posses a special blend of speed, size, and playmaking ability. Jones is a threat to score everytime the ball finds his hands. Adding to the on-field excitement, the Falcons will open the 2017 season in a brand new, $1.5B state-of-the-art stadium. Mercedes Benz Stadium is a magnificent structure featuring a retractable roof and cutting edge electronics.

The Atlanta Falcons will return a young and energetic defense in 2017. Linebacker Vic Beasley led the NFL in sacks last season. Beasley sets the tone of this defense with his blazing speed and relentless pass-rushing ability. Younger players, Keanu Neal and Deion Jones will look to build off great rookie seasons. The Falcons signed powerful defensive tackle Dontari Poe in the offseason and drafted outside linebacker Takkarist McKinley in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. If McKinley lives up to his draft grades, he has the chance to be an instant impact defender. All in all, the Atlanta Falcons have the most exciting young defense in the NFL.

The Atlanta Falcons' 2017 home opponents are: Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, and Carolina Panthers.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Special Events: In 2017, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be home to both the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and an MLS team, the Atlanta United. Featuring state-of-the art technology, and a retractable roof, this multi-purpose stadium will have a flexible seating capacity of up to 83,000 for major events. Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host Super Bowl LIII in 2019. The new stadium will also be holding the College Football Championship Game on January 8, 2018.
