Allstate Sugar Bowl Spotlight

The Allstate Sugar Bowl is one of college football's most storied bowl games having been played annually since 1935. The Sugar Bowl has been played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome since 2006. The 2018 Sugar Bowl will be played on Janurary 1st, and will feature a matchup between #4 Alabama Crimson Tide and #1 Clemson Tigers. This season, the Sugar Bowl will be a College Football Playoff Semifinal Game, which means that the winner will face the winner of the Rose Bowl on January 8th at the College Football Playoff National Championship game in Atlanta, GA. The Sugar Bowl has served as one of six rotating BCS Bowls in the College Football Playoff (CFP) starting in 2014. The reigning Sugar Bowl champions are the Oklahoma Sooners.

The 2017 Sugar Bowl will be played on Janurary 2nd; the matchup will set following the final playoff rankings released on December 4th. The Sugar Bowl has served as one of six rotating BCS Bowls in the College Football Playoff (CFP) starting in 2014. The reigning Sugar Bowl champions are the Ole Miss Runnin' Rebels. 

The 2016 Sugar Bowl features Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss. The game will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on January 1, 2016. The Ole Miss Rebels are favored over the Cowboys. Neither school has been in the Sugar Bowl in over 46 years. To get here, both the Rebels and Cowboys finished with the second best conference record in the BIG 12 and SEC.

This year’s Sugar Bowl should be a high scoring affair as both schools were top 10 in the nation in scoring. For Ole Miss, they have arguably the best offensive player in this game in wide receiver, Laquan Treadwell. Treadwell could be the first receiver taken in next year’s NFL draft. Treadwell helped the Rebels beat Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State this year.

Oklahoma State has been climbing uphill since week 1. They were unranked to start the season and finished 16th in the rankings. The Cowboys biggest win came in week 9 when they defeated the number 5 ranked, TCU Horned Frogs.

If the conference champion from the Big 12 or SEC is selected for the College Football Playoff, a replacement team from that conference will play in the Sugar Bowl. The Sugar Bowl is in a three-year rotation with the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl to host College Football Playoff semifinal games. The Sugar Bowl hosted the semifinals in 2015.
