Memphis Grizzlies Spotlight

After a disappointing season last year, the Memphis Grizzlies will look to bounce back in a strong way in 2018-19. Franchise cornerstones Mike Conley and Marc Gasol will be fully healthy, which means the playoffs aren’t out of the question for Memphis this year. Add in free agent acquisition Kyle Anderson and first round draft pick Jaren Jackson Jr., and things are looking up in Memphis.

Most of last year’s struggles were a result of Conley and Gasol missing time due to injury. Gasol at his best is one of the best centers in the league, and Conley is easily a top 10 point guard. Both are leaders for this young Grizzlies team on both ends of the floor.

Rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. gives the Grizzlies plenty of reasons to be excited about for the future. Drafted 4th overall out of Michigan State, Jackson Jr. is a versatile forward/center whose range extends beyond the arc. Expect Jackson Jr. to take on a bigger role as the season goes on. Memphis is also excited about 26-year old Kyle Anderson, who the team signed to a 4-year, $37 million contract in the summer. The versatile forward comes to Memphis from the San Antonio Spurs, where he thrived under Gregg Popovich.

Guards Dillon Brooks and MarShon Brooks will look to build off strong finishes in the second half of last year. Chandler Parsons, who is finally healthy, will also look to play a key role off the bench. Garrett Temple, JaMychal Green, and Wayne Selden are all in line to earn significant minutes for head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Past Spotlights

In the offseason Grit and Grind basketball acquired the perimeter shooting and playmaking they have desired for years in Florida product, Chandler Parsons. Although the Grizzlies have been a playoff contender in the West for a while they lacked a certain pizzazz, which Parsons brings. This season’s iteration of the Grizzlies should be exhilarating to watch and have a shot at knocking off the Warriors in the Western Conference thanks to their veteran stars. Point guard Mike Conley is as steady as they come and provides the perimeter scoring and passing to compliment big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. Gasol is one of the most skilled scorers in the NBA as well as an excellent defender. The big Spaniard is a surgeon in the low post and an expert facilitator from the elbow. Randolph, who was affectionately dubbed “Z-Bo” is a low post beast who excels as an offensive and defensive rebounder. Adding Parson’s creative playmaking and dead-eye shooting to that mix makes the Grizzlies a scary team in the West.

Off the bench, the Grizzlies have former superstar Vince Carter and a couple gifted youngsters. This year’s draft picks Wade Baldwin and Deyonta Davis are both burgeoning with potential. Baldwin is a dynamic athlete and shooter at the point guard spot, while Davis is a huge and skilled power forward. If the rookies prove ready to compete from Day 1 and Carter provides steady production and leadership then the Grizz will be a force to be reckoned with in a competitive western conference.
