After trading away much of their offensive and defensive core in 2018, the Rangers had a productive offseason that suggests the Blueshirts are ready to contend once more to give star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who is now 37 years old.
It started in the NHL Draft over the summer, when the Rangers selected scoring winger Kaapo Kakko, who is expected to pay immediate dividends with the club. Artemi Panarin (from Columbus) was the big free agent signing, and defenseman Jacob Trouba was acquired via a trade with Winnipeg.
Besides the 18-year-old Kakko, youth is on the Rangers’ side. Pavel Buchnevich scored 21 goals in 64 games, so a full-season’s production is expected out of him. In all, there are 13 players under 25 on the team’s opening night roster.
