Sporting Kansas City is one of the charter clubs of the MLS, founded in 1996 by MLS icon Lamar Hunt. Originally known as the Kansas City Wizards, Sporting KC won the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, and the club expects to make a deep playoff run towards another MLS Cup in 2018.

In 2013 Children’s Mercy Park became the first venue to host the MLS All-Star Game, US men’s national soccer team, and the MLS Cup all in the same year.
