Sporting Kansas City is one of the charter clubs of the MLS, founded in 1996 by MLS icon Lamar Hunt. Originally known as the Kansas City Wizards, Sporting KC won the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, and the club expects to make a deep playoff run towards another MLS Cup in 2018.
Sporting KC is fortunate to have two of the best players in Major League Soccer on its roster, goalkeeper Tim Melia and defender Ike Opara. Tim Melia and Ike Opara are two of just four players to be nominated for the 2018 ESPY award of best MLS player. Offensively, forwards Johnny Russell a Daniel Salloi have made a tremendous impact. Daniel Salloi is just 21 years young and has a bright future ahead of him. Sporting KC hopes to carry the regular season momentum into the Western Conference playoffs.
After moving in 2011 to Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, Sporting KC became the first professional sports team to play in the state of Kansas. In 2013 Children’s Mercy Park became the first venue to host the MLS All-Star Game, US men’s national soccer team, and the MLS Cup all in the same year. With a capacity of 18,467, the soccer-specific venue provides an excellent atmosphere to watch Sporting KC.
