San Diego Chargers Spotlight

Offense: Phillip Rivers is probably very excited for the 2016 season. Last year Rivers rebooted his career under offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and had one of his best seasons to date. Rivers threw for 4792 yards and 29 touchdowns despite missing his top receiver, Keenan Allen, for half the year. In 2016, Allen looks like he’ll be able to put together the biggest season of his career, after finishing with 67 receptions, 725 receiving yards, and 4 touchdowns in only 8 games last year. San Diego’s other top passing game weapons are tight end Antonio Gates, running back Danny Woodhead and receiver Benjamin Watson. Swiss Army Knife Danny Woodhead, led the team in receptions and receiving yards in 2016 and should continue to leverage his versatility and playmaking abilities into another strong year. Antonio Gates will be a Hall of Famer whenever he retires, but for now the veteran keeps on plugging along and consistently performing like one of the better tight ends in the league. Newly signed Travis Benjamin had a breakout season with the Browns last year and should inject the Chargers offense with some much-needed game-breaking speed. Combine the potent passing game with a breakout season from sophomore running back Melvin Gordon and the Chargers should be one of the most fun offenses to watch in the NFL.

Defense: The Chargers seriously struggled on defense last year until Denzel Perryman took over the middle linebacker spot from Donald Butler. Perryman was a revelation in the middle of the defense last season and immediately changed the way the San Diego defense looked on that side of the ball. They were transformed from one of the worst defenses in the league to an above average one. The best player up front for San Diego last year was definitely outside linebacker Melvin Ingram. He led the team in sacks with 10.5 in 2015, but highly touted first round pick Joey Bosa should challenge Ingram for that distinction. Bosa was considered the best player in the draft and probably should have been the top pick based on his talent, but as happens often two quarterbacks were drafted before him at 1st and 2nd. Jason Verret showed why many NFL teams think he could be a star in this league, as Verret broke up 12 passes and intercepted another 3. The combination of Perryman and Notre Dame product Manti Te’o should lead an improved defense into 2016.

Schedule: In 2016, the San Diego Chargers will be hosting the following teams at Qualcomm Stadium: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans.
